Animal shelters depend heavily on volunteers and financial contributions in order to operate. Below are some of the ways animal rescue organization use their funding. Medical Care - Veterinary bills are a shelter's largest expense. Many of the animals that end up in shelters have been neglected or living as strays. As a result, they often suffer from serious injuries and health conditions such as worms or parasites. Shelters must not only treat all animals before they are ready for adoption, but also provide routine health exams, testing, and sterilization for the animals in their care. Subsidies - Many shelters also offer discounted or free health care and pet supplies to families who would otherwise put their pets up for adoption. This assistance to families going through economic difficulties helps reduce the stray population and the burden on shelters. Staff - While the majority of work in most shelters is carried out by volunteers, most organizations employ a small staff to manage the shelter’s finances, coordinate with veterinarians, and hold awareness events.
